I also contacted a professional voiceover and explained what my poem was based around. With my surprise they gracefully offered to voice it free of charge since it is a subject they hold dear themselves!
I believe the poem i created delivers a shock factor and expresses the deep research in to this subject.
I like to place my love in people;
My trust is easily earned
But please,
Don’t take it for granted
As it’s a bond that’s easily burned.
They say I am man’s best friend
I’ll have to sadly disagree,
What type of friend chains me up…
And then abandons me.
I’m pacing around,
Scared and confused.
Why chain me up,
Feeling cold and abused?
Just bring me inside,
Let me lye by your feet.
Even after all this wrong,
It’s still you I want to greet.
I like journeys in the car
I don’t mind the back seat,
As long as you don’t leave me
To painfully overheat.
I hear the door opening
And hesitantly wait to see,
If I’m greeted by my loving owner
Or the monster who’s violent to me
I like to play and prance around
You’ve got to understand,
But one paw out of line
And I’m shown the back of your hand.
You grabbed me by the tail
While I struggled to break free.
All I could think was:
“Please don’t do this to me!”
My bed is a cage
Which consists of one thing,
A muzzle for me,
So I cannot complain.
Lucky few have a decent home
Many of us are left alone.
The pet you see before you, a time ago stood tall
Now I’m very lucky to even stand at all
Now you know my situation
See it from my view.
I just can’t stand the pain again
Neglected, battered and bruised
What’s next for me?
Animal experiments were suggested,
More pain, ending in death
Just for cosmetic testing
As an abused animal I scare quite easily
But there is one thing which undoubtedly petrifies me.
With the eerie sound of chopping steel
My heart begins to race and it all becomes real
Decapitated and hung up on show
This is how I die,
Then eaten during a festival.
